Researchers growing food in space

The TIME SCALE research project will investigate how astronauts can be self-sufficient. It is all about colonalization of space.

- We have been involved in research activity on the International Space Station since 2006, growing plants in a small experimental greenhouse, says research manager Ann Iren Kittang Jost at CIRiS (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Space). - Now we are going to improve this research facility.

Researchers will study how plants will grow under different gravitational conditions, such as those we find on the surface of the Moon and Mars. The project is also about securing technology and know-how for sustainable food production on Earth.
