The TIME SCALE project is investigating the feasibility of growing food crops in space and whether this might provide astronauts with long-term supplies of food and oxygen.
This research has implications for agriculture closer to home. Ever-increasing pressures on available arable land and water resources mean that maximizing resources and minimizing waste need to be prioritized. Sustainable greenhouse-based crop production methods could lead to a significant reduction in fertilizer and water use.
